Shop Alexandria Holiday Challenge
Living in Northern Virginia we have literally hundreds of options for shopping and when you go online the possibilities are endless. Putting a little more thought into our shopping by choosing local businesses doesn’t cost anything but can have a notable impact on our community.
In these tough economic times its more important than ever to support our local businesses. For every $100 spent at a locally-owned business, $68 stays in the local economy compared to only $43 if spent at a national chain.
I’ll admit, last year I was a bit of a scrooge. I did a lot of my holiday shopping online because it was fast and easy but what little money I saved by shopping on the web was negated by shipping charges. I never felt like I got into the holiday spirit of giving. Not to mention my gifts lacked imagination and were pretty generic. To be honest my gifts were probably pretty lame.
This year will be different. I going to put more thought behind my purchases and commit to doing 100% of my holiday shopping in ALEXANDRIA supporting as many local, independent businesses as possible. (of course there are certain things I’ll have to buy from a big box store but I’ll make sure I chose one in Alexandria)
From Thanksgiving food and spirits to decorations, table accessories, holiday attire and gifts……it will all be from ALEXANDRIA. In some cases this may mean buying someone one really cool present from a local boutique rather than two lame gifts from Amazon. The idea is quality over quantity.
I am really excited about this and I invite you to join me.
I challenge all of my readers to help support our local businesses by doing the same. Put a little more thought into where you are shopping. Purchase as many of your holiday items as possible from local independent businesses. When you discover a great local find spread the word by sharing it on our Facebook Wall and yours. Share our logo with your friends.
