The Birthday Party Scene
Our daughter is turning three in March so we recently started brainstorming about what to do for her birthday. We immediately crossed off having something at our house because of space constraints. We knew we would have 12-15 kids plus parents so all of a sudden it is 30-40 people for the event. Last year, we held her party at MyGym in Kingstowne and it was a great experience because we all showed up, the MyGym staff took charge, there was a set time frame, all the kids had a great time and we left without having to worry about clean-up. This...

By Lauren Sigler Sometimes, when you see a need for something, the best way to fill it is to do it yourself. That’s just what Alexandria residents Jennifer Peterson and Katie Hilderbrand have done with their new children’s clothing line, Oh My Darling Designs. The friends were looking for quality clothing that dressed their young children nicely without costing a fortune. As Katie describes it, “the clothes I want to see my children in, that they can put away and have my grandchildren wear one day.” Hence the birth of...

A couple of weekends ago it was unseasonably cold and pouring rain. Our weekend plans were ruined. I had an errand to run in Vienna and thought it would be a great idea to take the girls to Tyson’s Corner to buy some new shoes and have “fun” at the mall. I thought it would be fun for the girls to get “officially” measured and pick out their own shoes and then we’d have lunch at the cafe! It was going to be perfect. Even though we got there right when the mall opened the shoe department was complete...

Two Alexandria moms (and one pop) entrepreneurs have just launched a great new kids product. The Secret Pocket Pillow combines a decorative pillow, stuffed animal and treasure box into one sensational toy. For ages three to eight, the Secret Pocket Pillow is made of cozy fleece with an adorable appliqué design on front and two hidden pockets. The large zippered pocket on back holds all types of toys, books and goodies, while the small pocket on front is hidden within the design and is a perfect “tooth fairy” pocket. Secret Pocket...

Consignment shopping is back in vogue. Ten years ago you would be hard pressed to find a really good consignment shop in the area but today more and more options are surfacing. Children’s clothing, in particular is perfect for consigning because they are worn for such a short period of time and often, especially with nicer clothing, never worn at all. 529 Kids Consign is an innovative concept because it’s a “pop-up” store. They cross market with other businesses catering to women rather than having a retail...

I lived in Waynewood for kindergarten and first grade and discovered the best kids store ever, the Hollin Hall Variety Store. They have a whole aisle devoted to every kind of candy you can imagine and another with more little toys that you can count. Over the years many a stocking stuffer came from this store. The Hollin Hall Variety Store is located in the Hollin Hall Shopping Center between the Safeway and The Blossom Shop. The Variety Store is a True Value store servicing the Fort Hunt area with a store that sells just about...

I have small girls who are adorable in anything – but as a mom, I love finding cute things for them to wear on special occasions, and we really do have some of the best shops around in Old Town and Alexandria. Huge “box” stores like Macy’s don’t really cut it for us. I like the smaller boutiques that I can pop into and not have to navigate through an entire store only to find mediocre girls clothes. Some of my favorite Alexandria Shops are located in Old Town or Delray – and I’ve also included...
