Mommy & Me Kabob Palace
Last week I took my girls to lunch at Kabob Palace on S. Eads St. in Arlington. I had nearly forgotten about this place until I drove by the other day and took notice. Kabob Palace is a an Afghani kabob take-out/dine in spot with a nicer sister restaurant next door with white tablecloths and silverware and yet another sister restaurant next door to that with a buffet and two small private rooms.
This little hole in the wall is a popular Crystal City lunch spot with Military folks and taxi drivers and its open 24 hours which means they do a swift late-night business. Part of the reason I chose this restaurant was because of the buffet. We arrived at about 12:20. Parking can be tricky. If you park at CVS make sure you park in a “kabob palace” designated space.
We walked in and found a table immediately. I was hoping for one of the private rooms which are first-come first served but they were already taken. The beauty of the buffet is that we had food in front of us in less than five minutes.
That’s my favorite way to dine out with kids. Instant gratification. No waiting, no snacks and no fooling around with crayons or ipods. I really do wish buffets weren’t such a thing of the past.
My girls may be different from other kids because they will eat beans and rice over chicken nuggets any day which is why I knew this place would be a safe bet. I filled our plates with the chicken kabob, rice and stewed chickpeas. Kabob Palace is famous for its rich and tender chickpeas. The girls loved the chickpeas. I also had the salad topped with what I thought was an herb dressing but later discovered was “green sauce” for the flatbread. It tasted pretty good on the salad but even better with the warm flatbread. They also have something of a rice pudding for desert which was a huge hit with the girls. All in all the buffet was a thumbs-up. I think I prefer the made-to-order kabob from the original Kabob Palace 2 doors down, but for our purposes this was perfect. Also the acoustics are great for kids. There is plenty of chatter, the kitchen is noisy, and there is Afghan music in the background as well Afghan TV on a flat screen in the corner.
