The Green Spring Garden is a favorite spot for all Gardner’s in Alexandria. We are so lucky to have this Botanical Garden in our area, because it is a great show case of our history! It’s easy for children to imagine living here just after we earned our Independance! The property was donated by The Straights, and includes a restored 1784 historic home and the beautiful gardens that are kept in the “spirit” of the original owners.

The American Horticultural Society’s is very active in Alexandria, and they offer tours (with TEA!), there’s a Horticulture Center that sells plants, offers classes and has an extensive Horticulture Library. In addition to this, there’s a Green Garage program which started several years ago as a challenge to Gardner’s and to encourage people to make earth-friendly choices while creating and maintaining a beautiful and thriving garden.

The Green Garage display features a model garage and surrounding garden to demonstrate the tools, equipment, materials, and techniques that support sustainable gardening. From plant choices and beneficial insects to a green roof, there are dozens of options – large and small – that every gardener can include in their urban, suburban, or country home and landscape. You can take a quiz to find out how “Green” your garage is (I have some work to do!)!

Each Spring, there’s a wonderful Garden Tour - it really is a fun place to visit, and I especially think children in 4th and 5th grade who are studying Alexandria History would find it interesting!
