Antiques In Alexandria To Benefit The Twig

May 7, 2011 by

Antiques in Alexandria is an annual event that in part benefits The Twig, a great Alexandria Junior Junior Auxiliary of Inova Alexandria Hospital (they’ve raised over 2 million dollars for the Hospital!).  The event started over 10 years ago as an “Antique Road Show” to bring antiques for sale to Alexandria.    Every year over 100 volunteers help plan and produce a show with nationally known exhibitors from across the country.

This year “Antiquers” (is that a word?) and dealers will come from CT, NC, MD, IL, TN, PA and Williamsburg to offer beautiful furniture, rugs, clocks, folk art,  jewelry and more!  The show always has a features a wide array of fine American, English, Oriental and Continental furniture.  Last year, I was able to get a really cool piece for our Garden!

The Twig is among the beneficiaries of Antiques in Alexandria, and their members assist with the preparation and production of the show.  The 2011 show is scheduled for May 20 – 22, and will be held at the Hilton Mark Center.  Tickets for the event are $15, and they allow you to go home and measure or pick up a cushion to be sure your purchase is going to match and come back!

There’s a lot more that goes on than just the Antique Show!  There’s also a Silent Auction from May 18 – May 20th, and a Book Signing by Catherine B. Hollan who will sign her new book, Virginia Silversmiths, Their Lives and Marks (if you are into that kind of thing?)

In addition to raising money for The Twig, money from the event will also go to Alexandria’s History Museum (The Lyceum) on S. Washington Street.  The funds going to the Museum will, in part be used to sponsor special programs for Alexandria School Children.  The Alexandria Association will also receive part of the funds, to conserve some of our oldest Historical properties, like the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Shop, the Lloyd House, the Lee-Fendall House and Gadsby’s Tavern.
