Alexandria Garden Tours
We have some Green Thumbs in Alexandria (just sayin’!). There are always wonderful Garden tours and events in April. You can visit historic homes, and talk to Gardening experts about what will work in your yard! You can even have High Tea, while you tour Spring Green Market!
- Historic Alexandria House and Garden Tour – April 16, 2011, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Old Town will be the host to Six of Alexandria’s finest historic homes and gardens. The homes are open to the public as part of the oldest and largest Garden Tour in the Nation! For $40 you can do a Self-guided tour of six homes and refreshments. To view just a Single house or garden the admission is $20. In addition, the Lee-Fendall House Museum and Garden; the Carlye House Historic Park; Mt. Vernon; the American Horticultural Society at River Farm; Woodlawn; and Gunston Hall Plantation are included in the full ticket price. The six houses represent some of the finest and earliest structures in the Old Town district, with the houses built between 1796 and 1856.
- Spring Garden Market at River Farm – April 15-16, 2011. River Farm, 7931 East Boulevard Drive, Alexandria, VA. The American Horticultural Society (AHS) presents the Spring Garden Market at its River Farm headquarters. It’s a great place to pick up flowers for your garden, because the flowers sold here are from Master Gardners IN Alexandria. That’s important, because the plants you get at WalMart (for instance) were probably grown in California, or some other region. Getting plants that are native to our area, means that they will have a high chance of making it, if you don’t have a green thumb! Also nice – Master Gardeners have a booth onsite to answer gardening questions.
- Friends of Carlyle House Annual Herb Sale – April 16, 2011, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Carlyle House Historic Park, 121 N. Fairfax Street, Alexandria, VA. While this is a Free Event, remember that if you want to see the Carlyle House (which is beautiful!) they charge $5 for adults and $3 for children. As part of the Virginia Garden Tour, they will be selling Herbs and perennials from the gardens and greenhouses of George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate. They will also be selling a pretty wide variety of local jewelry, home goods, and crafts all created by people here in Alexandria. The proceeds from the Sales of herbs and plants will be used to support the preservation of Carlyle House, which is our oldest home in Alexandria.
In addition to these events, there are TONS of things going on all the time at Green Springs Gardens in Alexandria!
