Mom Made Foods

Dec 12, 2011 by

Most of us would prefer to have healthy meals made from scratch every single night but few of us have the time.  I was doing an unrelated web search the other night and and came across the Mom Made Foods website. As it turns out the owner, Heather Stouffer, lives right here in Alexandria and was recognized in the Washington Business Journal’s Top 40 Under 40 last year.

Heather started Mom Made Foods in  2006 after struggling to find healthy, high quality store-bought alternatives to meals made from scratch. Growing up in a family that loved to cook, Heather was accustomed to home made meals, but like many of us she discovered that with a busy life cooking dinner is sometimes just impossible.

For my girls the protein component to their meals (if we’re not eating the same thing) can be challenging especially if I don’t have leftover meat or beans to give them. Personally I’m kind of funny about lunch meats (nitrates) and frozen or pre-prepared chicken (particle board) and meat. I’d seen Mom Made Foods at Whole Foods and decided to try them today. I bought the turkey meat balls and the macaroni and cheese.

I cooked the meat balls in my favorite Rao’s Arribiata sauce (I’ve vowed never to spend the time on tomato sauce when it comes this good in a bottle) and my whole family had spaghetti and meatballs for dinner.  The meatballs were good. The girls loved them.

The meatballs were small enough for kids, mild in taste and moist. They are low in fat and made with natural organic ingredients. My almost four-year-old was unprompted when she said,”mommy these meatballs are really good.” She later asked what the meatballs were made of and (because there are only a few ingredients and they are all natural ) I was able to tell her.

We’ll try the mac and cheese with vegetables tomorrow.  I love the fact that not only does it feel good to buy easy healthy, organic  food for my kids but it also feels good to support another Alexandria Mom and her business.
