For this weeks lunch with my daughter I was really craving Mediterranean food and since the purpose of this blog is to try new places and things I googled Mediterranean restaurants in Alexandria and came up with Mazza. Located in the Carlyle property across from the King st. Metro I thought this would be a perfect choice. We parked on the street and searched the whole property only to discover that just like every other restaurant I’ve tried to find over there, it was gone. Remember Stella’s? I knew I should have called first.
I had to regroup. I wasn’t in the mood to try the Dutch Touch Deli or the pizza joint. I also didn’t want to look for parking again since we had a free, yes free, spot right in front. I honestly stood there for about 5 minutes after I parked just staring at the sign to make sure I wasn’t mistaken. There was no electronic pay station in site. I was shocked since we were right next to the metro.
So we crossed Duke and headed towards the PTO. Would you believe I’ve never really been over there? I’ve driven through a few times but never actually been in any of the restaurants. I scanned the options and bingo. Jimmy John’s. In case you don’t know Jimmy John’s is a great sandwich chain that recently came to the area. Their bread is freshly baked and soft. It was surprisingly uncrowded. In fact the whole plaza was surprisingly uncrowded for lunch hour.
I ordered a turkey sub and they have these smaller subs with just meat and cheese that are perfect for kids. We ate our subs outside and Sophie was dying to go over to the fountain. There is a huge lawn and if the grass hadn’t been muddy she could have run around there too.
This would be a great place to take your kids for an early dinner, have a little picnic and let them run around in the grass and play. There are several food options so you are not limited to just the sub shop.
